Running in the Snow
January 21st, 2007 by K. Liisi Linask
It finally got cold enough this week in Maryland for a bit of snow. I intentionally waited for the snow to accumulate a bit before going out running about a half hour before sunset.
There wasn’t any more than about a half an inch on the ground when I started out, but it was still snowing lightly. It was what I consider perfect snow running conditions. The temperature was in the upper 20′s°F and just a light breeze. Once I got away from the roads it was peaceful out there. Very quiet footsteps with a slight squeaky snap from the snow. The only other sounds were from birds here and there: a chattering Belted King Fisher, a chirping Cardinal, and some honking from geese way overhead. Originally, I wasn’t intending on going any further than about four miles, but I was enjoying being out there so much that I kept going for about eight miles, total. Runs like this don’t happen very often, so I just go with them and extend them when they do. It was dark by the time I made it back, but with all the reflection from the snow it didn’t seem so late. I loved every minute!
